Google Overhauls Search Box After 25 Years: Multimodal AI Conversational Interface Arrives
Redesign Marks End of an Era for Iconic Search Bar
Google has formally retired the classic thin white search box that defined web navigation for a quarter century. At its annual I/O developer conference today, the company unveiled a sweeping redesign transforming the simple keyword field into an AI-driven conversational platform.

Users can now input text, images, PDFs, videos, and even open browser tabs directly into the search box. The expanded interface also coaches users to formulate complex queries with AI-powered suggestions that go far beyond traditional autocomplete.
“This is the biggest upgrade to our iconic search box since its debut over 25 years ago,” said Liz Reid, Google’s vice president and head of Search, during a Monday press briefing.
The change merges Google’s previously separate AI Overviews and AI Mode features into a single seamless search flow. The new box dynamically expands for longer, more conversational queries and now accepts multimodal inputs at the primary entry point without extra steps.

For 25 years, the Google search box remained virtually unchanged: a thin white rectangle with a blinking cursor that encouraged brief, keyword-based queries. This interface generated billions of searches daily and supported the vast majority of Alphabet’s revenue through advertising.
The previous system forced users to choose between traditional blue links and an AI-forward experience. The new design eliminates that friction by integrating AI capabilities directly into the main search entry point. The update rolls out immediately in all countries and languages where AI Mode is currently available.
What This Means
The redesign signals a fundamental shift in how Google expects people to interact with its flagship product. By removing barriers to multimodal and conversational input, the company positions search as an open-ended dialogue with an AI system backed by the entire web.
Industry analysts note this could significantly impact user behavior, encouraging more detailed queries that improve AI response quality. It also represents Google’s clearest commitment to integrating generative AI into its core revenue engine, potentially reshaping advertising models as search queries become more conversational.
“The search box is no longer just a gateway to links—it’s a partner in inquiry,” said tech analyst Priya Sharma. “This changes the psychology of searching.”
