Pledge to Share the American Dream: Million-Dollar Donations and a Call for Guaranteed Minimum Income
Breaking: Cooper Union Speech Unveils $8M Donations and Guaranteed Income Plan
In a major address at Cooper Union's Great Hall, a prominent philanthropist announced an $8 million donation spree to eight nonprofits and called for a guaranteed minimum income as part of a renewed American Dream pledge. The speech, delivered alongside Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Vindman, frames the donation as a short-term fix and the income guarantee as a long-term solution.

“We cannot merely attain the Dream. The dream is incomplete until we share it with our fellow Americans,” the speaker said, quoting from an essay published in January. The pledge aims to ensure that every American can achieve the “fullest stature” envisioned by historian James Truslow Adams in 1931.
Donations and Infrastructure Support
The $8 million in donations were directed to organizations including Team Rubicon, Children’s Hunger Fund, PEN America, The Trevor Project, NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, First Generation Investors, Global Refuge, and Planned Parenthood. Additional million-dollar gifts supported technical infrastructure projects such as Wikipedia, the Internet Archive, and open-source software.
“Short term fixes are not enough,” the speaker warned, urging other Americans to contribute to groups that help those in need. The pledge’s “second act” goes deeper, advocating for a guaranteed minimum income to ensure lasting economic security.
Background: The American Dream Defined
James Truslow Adams first coined the term in 1931, describing a land where life is “better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement.” The speaker revisited this definition after attending a high school production of The Outsiders, where the phrase “stay gold” took on new meaning: sharing the American Dream.

Inspired by S.E. Hinton’s novel, the speaker published an essay titled “Stay Gold, America” on January 7th, launching the Pledge to Share the American Dream. The pledge includes short-term charity and long-term policy change.
What This Means: From Charity to Systemic Change
The pledge signals a shift from individual philanthropy to a collective policy solution—guaranteed minimum income. If adopted, this would provide a baseline income for all Americans, reshaping the social safety net. The speaker’s call to action encourages others to support both immediate relief and long-term structural reforms.
“The road not taken is guaranteed minimum income,” the speaker implied, suggesting that this approach could complete the American Dream by ensuring economic opportunity for every person, regardless of birth or position.
